CLITORIS GROUP was a starting point to VAGINA CROCHETING, and there is no end to it in sight. People were invited in “I dare you to say clitoris”-group 2009 in Facebook, and since 2010 women have gathered together to crochet vaginas.
The concept is created by two visual artists TAINA KONTIO and SARI HAKALA, and the body of work is realized as community arts practise with women of all ages.
Women started claiming their sexuality back to themselves from the media, pornographic industry and church, this way reducing the undignified stigma, which has corrupted this vital area of female existence.
In crocheting events women could trust their secrets, nightmares, fears and joys to other women. Various shapes and sizes of colorful female genitals were introduced, everything from bold bushes and hilarious pussypies to grim cunts, timid twats and protective vaginas, as their stories were heard and appreciated.
The curiosity, sometimes fear, towards these events was great amongst women of all ages and need to join in and claim the owners rights of their own sexuality was evident.
Vaginas and related video and sound work were exhibited in Gallery 12, Kuopio, Finland.
